Last week I had my first day in my new career. This is the career I have been longing to get into since I graduated from college 5.5 years ago. The feeling of achieving what you dreamed of doing with your life is indescribable.
Especially to reach this milestone in my mid twenties! I have worked so hard all my life to succeed in school, internships and work. After struggling for years to get a job in my career with multiple job interviews, phone interviews, resumes, cover letters and applications…it’s almost as if applying to jobs was a part-time job.
After not hearing back for months from a job or being rejected with “We selected someone else.” It’s heartbreaking and makes me realize how it’s similar to dating. Putting yourself out there, meeting new people for the first time, not hearing back and being rejected. Yes of course applying for a career and dating are two different ball games, however as a woman in my mid twenties I did realize how both can give you the same feelings and emotions.
But as life has taught me, you cannot give up. When someone tells you no, you’re not qualified we chose a candidate that fits better…you use that to motivate you to apply somewhere else. Obviously that company was not meant to be.
I began my research and job hunt in April 2017. I figured the third time around job hunting after college would be easier and yes it did not take three years like the second time around however it was still challenging. I had numerous phone interviews, which I must say I do like how companies how phone interviews. It saves not only the company time but also yourself to filter out those obvious questions that are deal breakers such as salary.
In November, I received an email from a company to fill out an application because my background qualified. I didn’t think too much into it and of course filled out the application.
My motto was to go into all jobs with an open mind and not a big investment, I had been let down so many times that it was hard to get excited and your hopes up for nothing.
A few days later I had a scheduled phone interview with that same company and during my phone interview we scheduled an in-person interview. This was a great sign and did actually get my hopes up.
After a few rounds of in-person interviews and a writing test….I was offered the job offer as a Content Specialist. From my blog I am sure you can tell writing is my passion. It’s what I love to do and the fact that I am able to make a living off what I love to do is truly amazing.
That famous saying goes and it is true, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”
So as you are reading this, I am sure you have gone through the same struggles of finding your place in your career, whether you are just starting out, in your mid twenties or any age the advice I have goes for all. Be yourself, believe in yourself, don’t give up and your hard work will pay off. I promise you that and after being rejected from a few jobs…that just means that company wasn’t mean to be for you.
